IKMT pelagic trawl (Isaacs-Kidd)
Paravane net for capturing macrozooplankton and micronekton at high towing speeds.
The IKMT (Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl) was designed at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to capture larger and more mobile organisms than those caught by standard plankton nets. Its V-shaped, wing-like lower jaw (paravane) causes the gear to descend while keeping the mouth open at speeds up to 5 knots. The upper jaw is an aluminum bar. Filmar manufactures the IKMT in 4- or 5-sided versions, featuring a heavy-duty mesh body, an inserted finer-mesh net, and a plankton net codend. Ropes sewn along the edges reinforce the entire structure. Models have been delivered to research institutes in Canada and abroad.
