The problem
Parc de la Merci in Montreal (Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough) was home to more than 350 Canada geese. Residents complained about the mess and could no longer have family picnics there.
The solution
Filmar assessed the site and installed a net barrier along the river, alongside active wildlife management. Gates in the net kept river access open for anglers.
The results
After two breeding seasons, the number of geese at Parc de la Merci dropped by 69%. This is a result from that site, not a guarantee: every site is different.

Canada geese need to be controlled
Too many Canada geese can make a park unhealthy
- Canada geese thrive in urban parks with large expanses of short grass near water for feeding and breeding.
- An adult goose can produce up to 1 kg (2 lb) of droppings per day, which can quickly make a park unsanitary and contaminate nearby bodies of water.
- Parents can be aggressive to protect their young.
- Adult Canada geese will tend to return to breed in the same place where they were born, year after year.

We install the nets in April, before the eggs hatch, and remove them in September.
The net is a ground-level barrier between the water and the turf. It acts when the geese are not flying: adults lose their flight feathers during the molt, which lasts from four to six weeks between late May and late July, and the goslings do not fly until about two months after hatching. During these weeks, the families walk between the water and the grass. The net blocks this passage, and the park becomes a bad place to nest.
That is normal. Starting in late July, both adults and juveniles fly again, and no net stops a flying goose. The net did its job during nesting and molting, and its effect accumulates from one year to the next because geese return to nest where they were born. To move birds that fly, the solution is active management with dogs, offered by a partner.
A black knotless net, 3-3/4 in mesh, 3 ft high, in 50 ft panels set along the shoreline on poles. Gates in the net keep water access open for residents and anglers. The number of panels, poles and gates depends on your shoreline.
Yes. It is a passive method: no goose is touched or harmed. We follow Environment and Climate Change Canada's recommendations for managing Canada geese in southern Canada.
The Filmar crew installs the nets in April and removes them in September. We assess your site and make the nets and gates in our Quebec plant. Your team has nothing to install.

Two measurements are enough to get started: the length of the shoreline to be protected in linear feet and the number of accesses to keep (gates). We confirm the rest during the site assessment.
